The #SecretMenu Lessons for Leaders
It seems like Secret Menus are getting a big buzz today with the #PinkDrink from Starbucks. Secret societies are what Dan Brown’s best selling book The DaVinci Code was built on. Well, leaders listen up – there’s a secret in all these secrets we need to pay attention.
People want to be part of the “in crowd.”
Restaurants are using tricks of the trade that leaders can embrace to increase engagement and loyalty as well. According to Weisbord in Productive Workplaces, the author sites the 3 questions asked by every team member:
- Am I in or am I out?
- Do I have power or control?
- Can I use, develop or be appreciated for my skills and resources?
As a leader, project manager or even teacher – incorporating conversations around these 3 questions allows people to ease the threat of being on the fringe in a group setting. I tend to use these 3 questions when doing climate surveys, team development sessions, or personal coaching.
Individuals internally bat around these 3 questions – I just want to bring them out into the open so we might be able to engage in discussion on how to get everyone to feel part of the “in crowd.”
Bottom Line Learning: Everyone want to feel as though they are valued. The role of the leader is to initiate the conversations and find ways to value the contributions that allow people to engage with their hearts and souls.
Now it’s your turn – I want to read what you do to get people to engage and be part of the “in crowd.” Thanks for adding to the conversation.
